An article in "The West Australian" dated Thursday 12th August 1954, read
MAN DIES IN FALL DOWN MINE SHAFT
NORSEMAN, Wednesday - A mine shaft sinker, Sydney George Baker (about 30), of Roberts Road, Norseman, fell 250ft to his death in the main shaft of the Iron King pyrite mine, Norseman, at 3p.m. today.
Death is believe to have been almost instantaneous. Mr Baker was married and had two children. He was stripping the ore pass off the main shaft, when he slipped on staging near the 700ft level and fell to the loading station at the 900ft level. Except for the war years, when Mr Baker served in the Australian Army, he had lived in Norseman practically all his life. A member of a pioneer mining family, Mr Baker had been employed at this mine for about 12 months.
