Thomas was born Sebastopol Victoria and moved to WA in 1896. He worked in the railways and as a sandalwood cutter before working as a miner. He married twice and both wives died very young. He had nine children with several of them dying at a young age. He lived in Northam, Nannatharra (between Yalgoo and Mt Magnet), Yalgoo, Mullewa, Geraldton, and Youanmi.
