Other Information
Kalgoorlie Western Argus, Thursday 16 March 1899, page 10 - FATAL ACCIDENT AT BROAD ARROW - BROAD ARROW, March 10 Quite a gloom was cast over Broad Arrow on Thursday afternoon when it became known that Charles Deuchar, an old and respected resident, suddenly met his death. Deuchar and William Hughes had a contract for raising 500 tons for the Seabrook battery from the Raily Venture mine. At noon both were working below in the stopes, when a fall of about five tone of earth took place opposite Deuchar. An alarm was promptly given, and all hands were quickly at work to rescue him. The body was recovered in 15 minutes, but too late.
The remains were not badly crushed. It is the general opinion that the deceased was suffocated. Hughes was working about nine yards away, and escaped unhurt. At a coroner's inquest held by Mr. Davis, R.M., a verdict of accidental death was returned, and no blame was attached to anyone.
The funeral took place at 2.30 p.m. today, and gave evidence of the high esteem in which the deceased was held by his fellow citizens and workers. About 40 citizens led the way, then followed the body with J. G. Deuchar, Wm Hughes, and Sam Lang as chief mourners, and next came vehicles carrying a large number representing all classes of the community. The pro-cession was met at the grave by the Rev B. Taylor, who conducted the Church of England service. Mr Deuchar was only 36 years of age. He had been about six years in Broad Arrow, and had won universal respect. Great sympathy is felt for his brother, Mr J. G. Deuchar, who is greatly stricken over the sad occurrence, and for Mr Alec Deuchar, who is absent in the eastern colonies.
