Southern Cross.
A fatal accident occurred at the Transvaal mine on Thursday morning last, when an Italian named Jack Della lost his life. He went on night shift at midnight and was not again seen alive, after inspection by the manager at 4.30 a.m. Deceased, evidently met his death, by a fall of earth which struck him on the head, smashing in his skull. He was only discovered when the day shift relieved at 8 a.m. There were two men employed on the shift in this particular drive, but one was absent without leave.
An inquest was held before Mr. J. H. Stubbs and a jury, when a verdict of accidental death was returned. The jury added a rider to the effect that the miners were evidently not visited in accordance with the regulations.
Mr. M. K. Solomon, solicitor, appeared for Victor Legge and Co., the proprietors of the mine.
