An article in The Evening Star dated Thursday 3rd February 1910 reads:
MINER KILLED ON HORSESHOE MINE - MATE HAS NARROW ESCAPE
The horseshoe mine contributed another to the already long list of fatal accidents that have occurred on the Golden Mile shortly after 10 o'clock this morning when a married man named William Bain lost his life.
Bain and his mate John McAuley were shovelling at the 1000ft level, and according to report without the slightest warning a part of the stope in which they were working came away and completely buried Bain. McAuley, who was almost alongside of him, had a remarkable escape from serious injury.
The accident signal was given, and prompt measures were taken to extricate the body from beneath the mass of stone and dirt that covered it. In the meantime, Dr Connolly was telephoned for, and was present when the body of the unfortunate man was recovered.
Life was extinct, the neck and several of the ribs of the unfortunate man having been broken

BAIN.- Accidently killed at the Golden Horseshoe Mine, on February 3, William James Bain, the loved and loving husband of Kitty, and father of Florrie and Willie. Thy will be done.
Had God asked us well we know,
We would cry, "Oh! Spare this blow",
And with streaming eyes would pray,
"Lord, we love him, let him stay.
