Benjamin Champion HAND was born in September 1848 in Ludgvan, Cornwall, England. His wife Hanna SPARKS was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England and they married in Queensland on the 5 Aug 1876. They were to have 10 children in 23 yrs.

Some Matters Demanding Minister for Mines Attention.
On Friday night, August 19, Benjamin Hand left his wife and family of young children at Kamballie, and proceeded to his work on the Associated Gold Mine. It was fated to be his last few hours on earth, as early on the following morning he was lying lifeless, under hundreds of tons of cyanide tailings, another sacrifice to the greed of the share shark and the God of Mammon. On Wednesday and Thursday of last week an inquest was held, and the following verdict was arrived at by the jury:—” We find that the deceased came to his death through a creep of earth, in which he was smothered, and we consider no evidence has been adduced to show carelesness on the part of the management:- The full article can be read at:- Done to Death
